CHAPTER 33

North Block, Central Secretariat, New Delhi, India

There had been a surprising chill in the air that hadn’t been there when they’d arrived the night before. With it had come a fairly heavy fog. Mark and Sal had met up with Marine Staff Sergeant Tyrone Pirelli, thirtyish, short and stocky with a Marine issued high and tight haircut and whose loose cotton clothing did nothing to hide the sidearm he carried at his waist. They had made their way to the car where Pirelli had each of them sign for an M9, four spare magazines, seventy-five rounds of 9mm ball ammunition and a black leather holster before they had made the short drive north to the center of the New Delhi government district.

“What’s with this weather?” asked Sal.

“Don’t know,” said Pirelli. “It was good yesterday. You get a lot of this shit late in November when winter starts here. You get cold air waves come down off the Himalayas and what with it being the end of the monsoon season here there’s a lot of moisture that turns into fog. Kinda early though.”

“When does it burn off?”

“Sometimes it doesn’t. You never know.”

Pirelli pulled the car into a heavily guarded parking area behind a massive four-storey building. Its two-tone sandstone brickwork—red on the bottom half, bright yellow-tan on the top—stood out clearly even in the fog.

“You got my number?” asked Pirelli.

“Yup. You not coming in?”

“Nope I’m going to stay out here and keep the car secure. I might have to move so give me a call when you’re done. You’ve got the name and bureau office I gave you. They’ll give you directions inside and most everyone in there speaks English.”
